Val: "Both when Arnor was founded, and when Rhudaur was founded, that northern border would have been of least concern. From the time it BECOMES a concern, Rhudaur wouldn't have much strenghth for establishing new strongholds. Maybe there'd be a small one there (and we COULD call it Dol Hithaer if we want - but maybe something else). If it's small, it could be the domain of a Thane instead of a Count."Hmm, you are right about the Northern border in general - but this particular place (Northern Dol Hithaer) guards the road to Gundabad. And Gundabad since the beginning of the III Age was a Dwarven stronghold. There had to be a lot of thaffic there between Arnor and Gundabad and the Grey Mountains further East. It had to be guarded. Perhaps at one time it was a big, prosperous place - with Dwarves selling their wares and buying food. Then with the loss of Gundabad around TA 1300 it just became a fortress held against the Orcs. And in 1347 it has maybe already fallen and became an orc-tower? Not Angmarian, strictly speaking, but a stronghold of Gundabad orcs. What do you think? I'll buy that! It was probably re-named after the capture, but Rhudaurians could still rue the loss of Dol Hithaer! (after all, Rhudaurians should rue something! )

Ok, so Dol Hithaer is in the North and fallen to Orcs about 30-40 years ago. It is much regretted. Angmar, could you, please, translate Dol Hithaer "Misty fortress" into the Black Speech to get its current name?

Angmar, could you, please, translate Dol Hithaer "Misty fortress" into the Black Speech to get its current name? "Misty Fortress" in Black Speech would be Kala Migulûrz. Translation: Migul = Mist; MERP -ûrz = LOS (Land of Shadows Black Speech) adjective ending kala - castle, fortress, stronghold (n) LOS/SV (Svartiska)

Thank you, Angmar. I will soon put the fortress on the map.

It doesn't have to be an exact translation - if the Orcs simply want to re-name it.
Oh - and maybe it should get another Sindarin name as well. Just like Minas Ithil became Minas Morgul as far as the Gondorians were concerned.

I have updated the map. Now Dol Hithaer is in it and its new orcish name as well.
