The Shadow Over Rhudaur Roleplaying game is always in need of new participants. There are a number of characters who need someone to write for them. These characters are considered "public" (they belong to no one), and often they get overlooked in the story because of lack of time. If you wish to join, you are welcome. We do need more players. You are only required to be nice to others, to abide by the Admin's rules and to read LOTR and especially the Appendix A. If you are not a good writer, or not a native English speaker, no problem - participation will improve your skills. Leave a message in this thread if you wish to join. Remember, new roleplayers are needed.

Yep, I'm interested in your forum and would like to contribute. How should I go about doing that? Most likely step one would be to register. That's done. And then? Create a character and jump into a RP? Point me in the right direction on getting started. Are there any characters needed or types of characters? I have several humans in mind and hillman, too. Eagerly awaiting your reply. Annarima

Welcome, Annarima. Offhand, I can think of several characters who need keepers, so to speak. Some of the public characters who are pretty well-fleshed and play a pretty pivotal role in the story... like say, Tarnendur (the king) or Daurendil and Amantir (his two sons). There's the Queen Eilinel and so far she's been as mum as a corpse, so if you feel like making up a fresh character that no one has mangled much, there's a possibility there. We pretty much ignored the royal family, as you can see, we only took our pick of the daughters. Can't think of anyone else right now. But now that you've got Step One under your belt, I suspect Step Two would be to start reading, get a feel for the story and the characters. Glad to see you here. Welcome again.

Welcome, Annarima! We shall be happy to have you playing with us. As for the available characters, we do need someone to play already established public characters: In Rhudaur: Daurendil the Heir, Amantir and Queen Eilinel. Daurendil is a hot-head, more of Boromir-type that Faramir-type. Now he is very much besotted with Caelen, but Odare is still his best friend and (as everyone knows) most likely should be his future bride. You can take Daurendil if you like love-triangle plots. Amantir his brother is a very young, bookish guy. You may develop him in any direction you like. Queen Eilinel their mother is a still young noble lady, Mother-hen type, much disregarded by us. She is always there, but nobody mentions her, which is bad for the story. The common drawback of these 3 characters is that they are bound to die at 2/3 of the game - in summer 1347. If you prefer political intrigue, we shall need someone to play old Nimruzir of Fennas Drunin - the Captain of the King's army who is bound to be discredited by Broggha's intrigues. Also any member of the Private Counsil - Curugil, Elured etc. Also there are 3 other young men invited with Eryndil to form the King's new "Council of the young Faithful" In Arthedain we will need Beleg's mother, Celebrindol's wife, the one whom Celebrindol had preferred to Gimilbeth 40 years ago. I am afraid this Lady would be a bit unsettled by Gimilbeth's visit to Amon Sul. Beleg's young sister Valandil will give you better directions as to Arthedain Characters. I am sure there are more...Perhaps others here will help me. And, of course, you may introduce your own Original character: Dunedain or Hillmen. Just tell us first, what you want him/her to be and read the Rules about acceptable characters. In short it is: no half-elves-half dragons-half-ents and no guys with super-powers. You may also start posting for public characters - any of the above, and then, when you are more familiar with the game, take one as your very own. And be sure, we are very glad you joined us!

Hi Annarima, and welcome! Why don't you look over parts of the game and background information, and see if any particular "public" characters interest you. If none do - I think we'd be open to you starting up a new character. However - we'll want to discuss the character with you first, not knowing you - and wanting to make sure you understand our perspectives. The main thing for us is, we want this game to feel like it "fits" in Tolkien's history, in the years and locations indicated. Many gamers might be turned off by that - but it's really the only way that we are interested in playing it. On the other hand, we know we've written a lot - and can't expect you to read and comprehend it all prior to character inception and first post. So - please write some more here - or maybe make a special thread for yourself in this subforum, and we'll work on fitting you in. Please tell us how much of the pertinent Tolkien material you've read (it helps very much to read Appendix A, in addition to LOTR - because you need a little understanding of Arnor, Arthedain, Cardolan, Rhudaur and Angmar), how much of our site you've been able to review so far, and what kinds of characters you like to play.

Annarima, welcome to the board. This is a friendly group of people, very cooperative and helpful. The others have addressed most of your questions. If you have any other questions, just ask on the roleplay discussion forum or PM me.
If you want, you can capitalize your name (by default, all names are lower case when you first register). You go up to the top where it says "Profile" and click "Modify Profile." You can change your display name to anything you want, but you will always have to log in under the same name under which you registered.
Again, we are delighted to have you with us.

Thank you for the lovely welcome. I will take a close look at the public characters. A private character can come later. I have no desire to create a character that would be outside of Tolkien canon hence no half-dragons, super elves or super humans to gall you. And, when and if I create someone I hope he or she will be a good addition to the rp. Right now I am leaning towards the "hothead' Daurendil. Let the reading and catching up begin. A question: do we check posts with one another before going public with them?

A question: do we check posts with one another before going public with them? It depends upon how much other characters figure in your post. If they simply say a sentence or two without doing anything out of the ordinary - you just post in the game thread. If the owner of the character you used thinks his/her character would never say or do what you made him to do - the character owner will ask you to edit this part - and it is obligatory to comply. At first we always left a message in the Discussion thread: "I have posted. Any edits?" But lately we dropped it because everyone here will edit if another asks him. Another matter is the case when in your post you make another's character make some important move. Here it is better to get prior OK from the character owner, because if the owner doesn't like what you have written, all your post is likely to collapse. An example from out previous RP on another site comes to mind. There was a scene where several characters had a fight. Then one girl posted about her character coming and saying: "Let us stop fighting and be friends!". She was due to stop here and let the others react. But she didn't. She continued her post describing how the others hugged her character, stopped fighting and started drinking instead. Of course, the other players complained and the girl's post had to go to the trash. It was very unpleasant for everyone. But, apart from these ordinary RP rules, here we have additional ones. We are writing a story where the major outline and the outcome are already settled. So you can’t be as free with your own character as you are in other RP’s. If you take Daurendil, you can’t make him escape to Gondor, for instance, because he has to be in Cameth Brin in summer to get killed by Broggha’s assasins – it is already decided. But meanwhile you can make him love any girl of your choice! I hope that helps.
