THE ADMINISTRATOR RULES ON THIS MATTER:
1. No "Fred" or modern day names unless they fit into Tolkien's world (ie, Hilda would fit for Rohirrim or Northmen)
2. No made up strange names, ie, Icknack Rickbod, or other oddities (I just made this up off the top of my head)
3. No names such as "Bloodred Vampire Slayer," "Fang Girl," "Raven Shadowbane," "Jade Wolfclaw." "True Axe the Red-headed Dwarf" could possibly work. Titles are acceptable, not strange tavern rpg-ish sounding names.
WHAT IS ACCEPTED:
Names in Tolkien's languages:
1. Sindarin
2. Quenya
3. Adunaic
4. Black Speech (the fan-created dialects are perfectly fine to use)
OTHER NAMES:
1. Old English for Rohirrim and other Northmen
2. Old Norse for Dwarves and Northmen
3. Mid-eastern names for Haradrim and Khandian. These could be ancient, taken from Sumerian, Akkadian, or modern, taken from Persian or Arabic. The rule here is no names that have modern day religious significance to any faith, such as Ibraim.
4. Rhun, Dunland - Probably old Gothic, old Germanic type names. Old Norse could work, too. The rule is to stick with something European.
A NOTE UPON SPECIAL SYMBOLS
Some languages use special symbols that not all computers can read, especially Old English and Old Norse. If you pick a name like Æþelstan, the "þ" is a special letter called "thorn" and it can be replaced with a "th." So the name would read Æthelstan. Though most computers can see the "Æ" symbol, Tolkien probably would have simplified this name by writing it "Athelstan" or "Ethelstan." The symbol "ð" is also translated as "th." For example, áðum (Old English, brother-in-law) can be written áthum.
