Gordis, what a great post! You have the ability to draw the reader into the story.

Hah - I saw that I had slipped in a '1346' in the opening post! ;D I started a new Word document, and just modified the location and date info at the top - and didn't take note that I had the old one start in the previous year, where we used to be (I was running a single document from early March onwards... it got pretty long! ). Anyway - fixed. Gordis - I'll intro Annundil and write his response after I hear back from you via PM. Meanwhile, I think I'm long overdue to keep some things moving with Rian - so I'm writing on that now.

I will be away for three days: from tomorrow till Saturday. Use Daurendil and Gimilbeth as you need. I will try to reply to your PM before I go, Val. Thanks, Angmar - I am glad you liked the post. Rian: you must be right about stallions. I sadly never think of such things - so in my posts I treat the horses as bicycles or cars. I shall try to slip in the reference you suggested. Feel free to correct and add to my post what you think is appropriate.

Rian: you must be right about stallions. I sadly never think of such things - so in my posts I treat the horses as bicycles or cars. Well, I make terrible errors about geography 'n stuff, which you kindly correct Hey, I think it's cool that we're good at different things! I've been at ranches where the stallions are simply screaming at each other - there's no other word for it. I might give it a try, and put it in red or something. I think a little stallion bickering would be appropriate

Please do, Rian, please insert the stallion bickering for me. I guess Barund may have a mare - but maybe it just complicates things?

Gordis, another little bit of "horse lore" for you. Horses are very territorial animals, fighting any newcomers if they are all loose in a pasture situation. Even in a group of riders, when a horse unknown to the others is introduced to the group, there can be trouble - kicks, bites, resentment, bad manners - if the rider doesn't keep control over his or her own mount.
Back in ancient times when I was young and did not know that much, I was riding a new gelding that I had recently purchased through a pasturefield with some of my other horses. One mare, who considered herself the boss, attacked my mount while I was on him, biting and kicking him. It is a strange experience to be on one horse while another is trying to do him as much damage as she can. After that, I never rode a new mount among the other horses until the new one had been thoroughly acclimated into the group.
Donkeys and burros are equally territorial. Some of them will boss anything they can get away with - horses, cows, sheep, goats. In any group of horses or donkeys, there is always a hierarchy - top horse, often a mare, then going down the social ladder. They are fascinating. I have spent almost a lifetime around horses and donkeys.

I didn't know that - wonderful animals, aren't they?!
Why didn't you ever join into our horse discussions on the other rpg?
And what are your thoughts on the stallion thing?
