Let us post the descriptions of our new places - Dol Mithlad and Dol Hithaer.
Dol Mithlad
Dol=head; Mithlad = Grey Valley.
A fortress in the Vales of the Mitheithel where it flows out of the Misty Mountains.
Could be found at H-5 of the big Map www.northernkingdom.proboards98.com/index.cgi?board=roleplaythreads&action=display&thread=1177097722
What could be gleaned from the map? -
The city is situated on a hill on the South bank of the Mitheithel. The river here runs in a deep ravine (Misty=Gray valley), cut through a barren rocky plateau that slopes from the foothills of Misty Mountains. The rocky plateau is part of the Ettenmoors - the land of the Trolls. The uppermost Mitheithel valley is called "Ettendales" in LOTR. The high mountains are about 30-40 miles east of Dol Mithlad. The wooded area -Pinnath Aegring - is situated to the south of the city.
The only decent road leads to Dol Mithlad from the south, from Dol Duniath. To the north, over the bridge, there is an old road leading to the Pass of Dol Hithaer, and thither to Angmar and Gundabad, but this road is now neglected ever since the Dwarves lost Gundabad about 50-60 years before.
Dol Mithlad belongs to the Princes of Mitheithel - the oldest noble house in Rhudaur. Built maybe at the time of Arnor's greatness or later - shortly after Arnor's division.(?) Now, with the Princely house almost wiped out about 10 years ago, it is ruled by the Seneschal appointed by the King - Lord Dínen.
Dol Hithaer
(Dol=head, Hith = Misty like in "Hithaeglir"-Misty mountains)
Also called Kala Migulûrz in the Black Speech
A small fortress that guards the northern pass into Rhudaur.
Can be found at H-3 of the big map www.northernkingdom.proboards98.com/index.cgi?board=roleplaythreads&action=display&thread=1177097722
It is already high in the mountains - always makes me think of Cirith Ungol somehow. The fortress is "facing" North, so most of the battlements are preventing an attack from Angmar, but from the Rhudaur side the access should be easier - a disadvantage for the orcs who now hold it.
Dol Hithaer was an old fortress dating from Early Arnor that guarded the road to the Dwarven stronghold of Gundabad. There had to be a lot of thaffic there between Arnor and Gundabad and the Grey Mountains further East. Perhaps at one time it was a big, prosperous place - with Dwarves selling their wares and buying food. Then with the loss of Gundabad around TA 1290-1300 it just became a fortress held against the Orcs. The Orcs took it about 30-40 years ago, around 1307-1310. By 1347 it has became an orc-tower - Kala Migulûrz. Not Angmarian fortress, mind you, strictly speaking, but a stronghold of "independant" Gundabad orcs. Or at least that is what they think in Rhudaur.
Any additions and corrections are most welcome!
