I've deleted three spam threads this morning. One earlier and two more just now.
Anything we can do to block them out, before they come in?

I don't think we can do much - not the mods anyway. If someone becomes really obnoxious, then Angmar (and Angmar only) can ban theirs IP address, or a pool of addresses if the last digits are variable, as it is often the case with spammers. Angmar has done that before - for this Chinese guy - and it has worked.

We haven't had too many - had a bit a while back, but it's been pretty quiet lately - yay!

Angmar has done that before - for this Chinese guy - and it has worked. Everyone, only I can access the IP numbers and ban a server from posting. For that reason, please don't delete spam threads. I will get the IP information, ban them, and then kill the spam. It's the only way to get rid of them... until they get a new IP. I should be able to be here every day now and I will check.

OK - I won't delete them. Should I at least edit them and knock out all active links?

No one here is stupid enough, I think, to open their links... so-why bother?

Val, editing the post shouldn't affect how the original IP is listed, so you could edit the posts and I could still ban the posters. Gordis and I are in agreement. No one here is stupid enough to open the links.
As an afterthought - some of this spam might have links to pages with viruses or spyware. People who send them are just plain nasty.

What I've done on my board is I created a forum where spam threads can be moved to and not accessed by the general population, but are saved for IP identity purposes.

From elsewhere, I've developed a general habit of just cleaning things up when I see them. But from now on I'll at least leave the thread - even if I delete most of the contents of a post. (Hi Arassuil!)

Well, on big sites like the Moot deleting on the spot is a good idea: among many inexperienced members there would be a few who would open the links. Here we are all mature and cautious.
