History:

Tarnendur (born in 1190) son of Tarenion was the younger brother of King Ermegil, later deposed and killed by Hillmen. Tarnendur spent his youth in Gondor, which was at the height of its power, extending to Harad and Umbar. While visiting Umbar, Tarnendur fell in love with a noble Numenorean lady, Inzilbeth, and married her. It was met by disapproval by his own family and by the King Narmacil I of Gondor, as Inzilbeth's family had been formerly Black Numenoreans, and only recently repented and accepted the overlordship of Gondor.

Inzilbeth bore Tarnendur a daughter, Menelien, (born 1240), who was later known as Gimilbeth, "the star-sayer".
Inzilbeth died in childbirth in 1256, together with the son she carried. Tarnendur was stricken by his loss, and long remained unmarried.

Tarnendur stayed in Gondor serving King Minalcar (Romandacil) till the news of the slaughter of King Ermegil and his family by an usurper reached him in 1306. He declared himself King of Rhudaur by right of succession, and came North, to Arthedain (1306), to gather forces to reclaim his Kingdom. King Malvegil of Arthedain consented to help him to regain Rhudaur.
In 1307, King Malvegil gave Tarnendur permission to gather an army at Fornost. King Minalcar of Gondor sent some help - money to hire mercenaries. In a surprise attack, the Hillmen were defeated and driven North (in autumn of 1307).

Tarnendur regained his crown, but got a much weakened Kingdom to rule. Also, he didn't want Malvegil to inherit Rhudaur after his death, as he was the last in his line. The need to have heirs urged Tarnendur to marry, in 1324, a noble lady of Rhudaur, Eilinel, princess of Rhaglaw (born 1281). The new Queen bore him three children, two sons, (Daurendil and Amantir) born in 1327 and 1330, and a daughter, Tarniel, born 1333

Eldest daughter of Tarnendur and his first wife Inzilbeth from Umbar.
Born in TA 1240 in Osgiliath, where her father, at this time a youngest son of the King of Rhudaur, served King Narmacil. Inzilbeth was from a race of "repented" Black Numenoreans.

In her youth, Menelien was meant to be betrothed to young Valacar, future King of Gondor (TA 1250), but Valacar preferred to marry a Rhovanion princess, Vidumavi.

Gimilbeth's mother Inzilbeth died in childbirth in 1256. After that, Gimilbeth spent much time in Umbar, with her grandmother Serindë, a secret practitioner of the Dark Arts.

Gimilbeth and Tarnendur stayed in Gondor till the news of the slaughter of King Ermegil of Rhudaur and his family reached them in 1306. Tarnendur declared himself King of Rhudaur by right of succession, and came North, to Arthedain (1306), to gather forces to reclaim his Kingdom.

In Arthedain, Gimilbeth hoped to marry King Malvegil's eldest son Celebrindol (later Arveleg I), and Malvegil would have been happy with the match, but Celebrindol refused to marry according to Malvegil's and Tarnendur's wishes and married another lady (Mid-year's Day 1307).
In late 1307, Tarnendur regained his throne with Arthedain's help. Gimilbeth followed her Father to Cameth Brin in spring of 1308. She was declared Heiress to the Throne, but Arthedain didn't support her claim and the relations with Arthedain somewhat deteriorated. Seeing this, Tarnendur remarried (1324) and got himself male heirs.

Gimilbeth herself was away when the second marriage of her father took place, as in 1323, tired of Rhudaur, she took a long vacation in Umbar with her grandmother Serinde, where she had stayed till 1326.

Gimilbeth was not well liked in Rhudaur as her Southern ways seemed alien to Rhudaurians. She gained a reputation of a witch and was feared by most.

Although it is rumored that he has black hair and beard, and eyes so gray they seem almost silver, few have ever seen his face and those who have do not always agree in their description. Some allege that he is always seen wearing a cowl and face mask, while others say that is nonsense and his face looks much like any Dunedain. His enemies say that he has no face at all and deceives people into believing whatever he wants them to think he looks like by his great powers of illusion.

Around 1300, the Nazgul reappeared. The Lord of the Nazgul went north to Eriador and established the realm of Angmar on both sides of the Misty Mountains. The Witch-king's stronghold was Carn Dum in the northernmost peak. He gathered a force of evil Men, Orcs, and other creatures.

The Witch-king had chosen to establish his realm in the north because while Gondor remained strong in the south, the North-kingdom of Arnor was in disarray. Arnor had been divided into Arthedain, Cardolan, and Rhudaur in 861 and there was dissension among the three kingdoms. The Witch-king took advantage of this disunity to further his own plans of conquest.

There must have been some Dunedain somewhere in Broggha's background, for though he is around 50 years of age, he has the strength of a much younger man.

Background: Born somewhere in northeastern Rhudaur, the son of a tribal chieftan. Upon the death of his father, he assumed leadership of his clan. While in his late teens, he had bullied weaker chieftains into yielding power to him. During his 20's and 30's, he consolidated his power and ruled many villages. In his late 40's, he had ended most all opposition to him and was considered a rising great power, rivaling even the king of Rhudaur.

Background: Born on a small farm in western Rhudaur. At an early age, he learned reading and writing from an elder in the village. The hard work on the farm made him realize while still a young man that there must be easier ways to earn his bread and ale. He began stealing various goods, including sheep and stock from his neighbors, selling them in distant areas. Popular with the village girls, he found himself in trouble when one of the village leader's daughters told him that she was pregnant with his child. Fear that people were becoming suspicious of his thieving activities added to the girl's threat that she would tell her father that she was carrying his child and force him into marriage convinced Griss to leave the area. He joined the Arthedain military with Heggr. Becoming dissatisfied, he deserted in 1344.

Born somewhere in western Rhudaur in the same area as Griss. Can read a few words and sign his name. One of Broggha's loyal men.

Intelligent, average fighter, brown hair and beard, average height and build, brown eyes. Heggr is afflicted by bad teeth and arthritis and drinks more than his share of ale to ease the pain and help him sleep.

Background: Born in a village in western Rhudaur. Being the son of a poor man and with no land of his own, he earned his living by renting himself and the yoke of oxen given to him by his father out to farmers. Working in plowing season and cutting wood and hauling it with his oxen when farm work was scant provided him a livelihood. When one of his oxen became permanently lame, he butchered the animal, drying its meat. Forced to sell the other ox because he did not have the money to buy a replacement for the crippled one, he formed a partnership with Griss to help him sell and market stolen stock. He left the area with Griss and together they joined the Arthedain military. Becoming dissatisfied, he deserted with Griss in 1344.

Third son of a Thane of North Central Rhudaur. Lived up to his name as he grew - wandering far afield in woods and hills. Became expert hunter, tracker, scout.

At 25 - seeking to better his chances for achievement, he enlisted in the King's Service, and has been in the Army of Rhudaur since. Once his training was complete, his superiors recognized his abilities at woodcraft, and set him to work as a scout. He undertook many missions with a single companion or alone. Now, mid-way through his second 10-year term, he leads a patrol of 12 other men. He hopes to make a name for himself somehow, or at least to prove his faithfulness, that he might draw the attention of the King himself - perhaps become one of his retainers - then maybe be rewarded with a thane-hold of his own, if one would open up (as they so often had in Rhudaur).

Failing that - at least he could get a full military retirement after 40 or 50 years, still a young man of 65 or 75 - then marry well and settle down to a life almost as good as that of a Thane!

Eryndil is among the remnant of the Faithful in Rhudaur - and is somewhat dismayed at the ongoing collapse of his own society that he sees around himself. His oldest brother is 85, married with three young ones (ages 7, 12 and 17) - and Eryndil thinks him steady enough. His next brother (age 70) and older sister (55) are "dabblers" themselves. This breaks their mother's heart - but their father considers himself pragmatic and practical about it - and the oldest brother is like-minded with their father. His father is 160 and likely won't be around much longer. His mother is 125 - and still a rather attractive Dunedain lady.

Eryndil's favorite though is his younger sister - who is now 25.

Narwaith and Nimloss are brothers. Their father served in Rhudaur's army for 40 years, then settled into a small villa of his own on their grandfather's land - a Household on the outskirts of Eryndil's father's Thane-hold. About 8 years ago, while the brothers were out tending to the family herds, Broggha's men attacked, ransacked the place, slew the whole family and burned the buildings to the ground. The brothers joined right up with Rhudaur's army. Narwaith is about 39 and Nimloss 29. They are Eryndil's best men.

Gwaerod, Gwiroth and Lothrond, are "city-boys" from Tanoth Brin. Gwaerod is a bit slow, and Gwiroth somewhat of a "dandy" - Lothrond is about as "street-wise" as a city-kid from Third Age Rhudaur could be, but not quite so at home in the woods.

Norumar, Ceruvar, Urucerek, Ivanarth and Narbeth are young men who were raised at various households on Eryndil's father's Thane-hold. Norumar is a very large man - very tall, and figuratively "strong as an ox", Ceruvar is an accomplished musician - and likes to draw out his harp and sing when they camp for the night.

Hithirion and Griblung were raised at other House-holds in Rhudaur.

These men range in age from 25 to 45.

Information on Eryndil's Descent and Family:

The Thane-Share and Estate of Nandemar ("Valley Home") were established as a reward for loyal service to a Retainer of King Valandil of Arnor, in the Second Century of the Third Age (ca. Year 160), in what would later become the Kingdom of Rhudaur. It was typical of the Thane-shares of its day - a land grant of four leagues east and west by four leagues north and south. The Manor House was a twelve-by-twelve, and was three stories high, besides the roof. The second Thane added a new kitchen to the rear and a small guardhouse to the front.

Over time, tracts of the land were settled by farming families who became Householders. With the eventual increase in population, prosperity and coinage, and improvements in Arnor's roads, a town began to grow nearby a few centuries later - and this was named Duinand ("River Valley"). It was the fourth Thane, the great-grandson of the first, who expanded the manor home with his new-found wealth, adding a blockhouse to each outer corner, infill buildings to the sides and reconfiguring the whole according to the fashion of the day. All this was in the reign of Tarcil of Arnor - and was completed ca. year 500.

Around the Year 1100, the fifteenth Thane fortified the manor house with a great wall of stone (for a Thane-hold) close about it and a gate-house, which together created an inner courtyard to the front (which faced south) and spaces to each side and back. He also made palisades of earth and sharpened logs as an outer fence around his estate and about the entire town of Duinand - as well as a pathway which connected them, so that if the gate of either were breached, some at least might escape into the other. The manor had now become a fortress and was renamed Ostinand ("Fortress of the Valley") - and within its walls, all from the town, and many from the countryside, could gather in time of need.

This Thane-hold was rare in Rhudaur, for it was still held by the same family to whose ancestor it had first been granted. Only three times did it not pass directly from a father to his son, and in each of these cases, it went to a near relative. The eighth Thane was slain while young and still unmarried, in the wars of reprisals following the death of King Valandur of Arnor. At the prompting of King Elendur, his younger brother received the grant to honor the fallen. The twelfth Thane died childless and had only sisters (all married and far along in years by then), so the descent passed to his first cousin - the son of his father's younger brother. This came after the land had become part of Rhudaur, for it was in the time of the eleventh Thane (in year 861) that Arnor was divided.

Lastly - the sixteenth Thane was slain in battle on an incursion into Arthedain, along with his sons, his only adult grandson, and his brother. A nephew - the son of this brother - was also in the battle, but escaped. The King of Rhudaur at this time had few enough surviving favorites to reward with such an estate, so it was restored to the family in this nephew - Borlost - who was the grandfather of Eryndil. Borlost was still a young man at this time and unmarried, but soon secured the hand of a young maiden from Cameth Brin - a younger daughter of a Royal Official, to continue on the family line. This was all in the latter half of the 1100's.

Camglas, son of Borlost, is now Thane in Ostinand. He is the 18th Thane of Nandemar, and in the 16th generation of direct familial succession from the first (since twice the succession passed to the same generation). He is 160 years old, feels the advance of his years, and while he rues the changes in the land, seeks to find ways of compromise and peaceful living.

Rildorien is the wife of Camglas. She is 125 years old and still a rather striking lady, although clearly no longer in her youth. She was born into the family of a Thane from southern Rhudaur - and her own mother was from Cardolan (a noble family of the South Downs), wedding her father at one of those brief intervals of peace between the Kingdoms following the wars which claimed so much of Borlost's family. Rildorien is staunchly Faithful - and is grieved that most of her children do not seem to have followed suit. She is somewhat disappointed in the wife of her eldest son, and heartbroken over the choices of the next two children. But she finds hope in her youngest daughter - and even in Eryndil, although being so often far afield, he is sometimes also far from her thoughts.

Dornendur is the eldest son of Camglas. He is 85 years old and has married the daughter of a neighboring Thane, whose blood is far from full Dunedain. They have three children: sons aged 18 and 10 - and a daughter of 14. He is steady and quiet, and has taken on his father's attitude of allowing for different practices which break with Dunedain tradition, although claiming to be an adherent of the Faithful himself. His interest is in the efficient working of the land and the commerce in the town, in preparation of inheriting the Thane-Share himself, as he expects to happen within the next several years.

Vilyandur is the second son of Camglas. He is 70 years old, but has remained unmarried. Disappointed at his perceived lack of opportunities to inherit the Thane-Share, he turned many years ago from the Faithful traditions so carefully taught by his mother, to become a Dabbler in the Secret Arts of the Black Numenoreans who had come north with the foundation of Rhuduar. At his request, his father had built for him a refuge of his own - Marugond ("House in the Rock"), on a high piece of land removed from nearby dwellings. He spends as much time there as at Ostinand - and strange rumors circulate of what goes on in that place. At times he will depart for a few weeks on a mysterious journey, and say nothing of where he has gone.

Gildurien

Gildurien is the elder daughter of Camglas. She is 55, and has joined her brother Vilyandur in the Secret Practices. Much of her time she spends with her brother at Marugond, to the chagrin of her parents, who would wish to seek her a good marriage to some Thane's eldest son, or even a royal official, but she always seems disinterested.

Eryndil, as stated before, is the third son of Camglas. He is 40 and serves in the King's Army as a scout. He is Faithful, but has mostly been away from home since he took up the service 15 years before. He did make one extended stay at the end of his first 10-year term, but returned to his campaigning after spending a summer and a harvest at home. It was after this that he began to command his own detachment and the mysterious name of "Taurenol" started to spread in fear among those who would resist Rhudaur's rightful order.

Hendegil is the second daughter and youngest child of Camglas. She is 25 years old - not quite old enough to marry in the reckoning of the Dunedain nobility of her age, but nearly so. She is attractive and of sweet disposition, and has remained Faithful thus far. However - Vilyandur and Gildurien continually try to pull her along with them, and at times she feels as though she's wearing down. She has not yet visited Marugond with them, but saw it once from a distance.

These are the family of Eryndil. Ostinand proper has about 120 residents, including a few more distant relations, servants and retainers in service to the Thane. The town of Duinand is really a small village of perhaps 500. There are about 2500 people across the entire Thane-Share - most in the 60 or so Households, but a few Free-holders and others as well as the Townsmen and those of the fortress. It is a small enough place to not draw attention to itself - and well-enough protected to discourage a lesser assault - although some households on the outskirts of the land have been raided, a few even destroyed. It is however, modestly prosperous and wealthy. It also has a higher proportion of Dunedain among its population than most places in Rhudaur.

At this time in Rhudaur, royal soldiers are no longer assigned to Thanes - so that Thanes must gather and supply their own men-at-arms. Since the Division, Counts have been regarded as little more than Thanes (and are even called "thanes" - for the term was expanded to cover them as well) - and the power they once held has been placed in the hands of royal appointees. The men of power became the King and the Prince - and of late only the King. In the turmoil of the last few centuries, the lines of many Thanes have failed - often in battles and minor skirmishes. Some Thanes even have been made from Hillmen, who replace the fine manors they have sacked and burned with single-story longhouses made after the custom of their own people. At the time of Arnor's division, only about half the Thane-Shares were held by the same family line from which they sprang - and this was nearly 1000 years. By 1346, three or four parts of the Thane-Shares in Rhudaur are no longer held by the family that held them at the Division - and this was less than 500 years. In fact, the Thane who reinforced the manor house into Ostinand was ridiculed by the neighboring thanes, who thought he was making needless work for himself at great expense. But few if any of his former detractors now have descendants who rule the land they once governed.

The valley in which this is all situated opens more or less south by southeast. The town of Duinand is on the east bank of the river, and Ostinand is just a bit further up the shallow incline of the river valley - just east and just above the town. Marugond is in higher country, north and just a little west.

Character: Intelligent, calm, not easily impressed.

History: Fourth daughter of a merchant who lives near Iant Methed. Her grandfather, who was also a merchant, married a woman of the hill-folk in the hopes of making trade with them easier. While the trade made him prosperous enough, it never did make him wealthy.

His luck eventually turned and one day hillmen-robbers ambushed his caravan and killed everyone there. His wife, who had stayed at home ill during the attack, died years later of old age, which came a lot quicker to the hillmen than to the Dunedaín.

Wilwarin's father, Rinion, wanted nothing to do with the Hillmen after the death of his father and raised his children strictly according to the Dúnedain traditions. He however indulged his old mother to allow her to tell her grand-children stories of her people and youth.

Wilwarin came to Tanoth Brin to care for her ill and childless aunt and aid her with her work in the fortress. When her aunt nevertheless died over a year ago Wilwarin remained to look after her aunt's property until her father had time to decide what to do with it.

Wilwarin has brown eyes and dark brown hair, which show her hill-men legacy. But her loyality lies with the Dúnedain.

Character: So far established, that she has a nasty temper, which she curbs only when her best friend Tarniel is nearby. Likes expensive looking clothes, rather plain, enjoys dog-races. Can stand non-expensive clothes if there's an adventure connected with it. Like all girls her age, highly romantic, but there is a lot of sense in her head as well. (Its a sort of confused mass of romantic notions and practical ideas battling for supremacy)

Orphan, raised by her kinspeople. Ask Val or Gordis for further details re: her childhood.

Pale hair, blue-grey eyes. Exactly what combination of features made her unlovely, i'm not sure, but I believe her nose is too upturned, her eyes too insignificant, and her hair too blowsy. She's also short, which is very unusual in Tolkien humans, and this annoys her... A LOT.

Lord of Dol Dunaith. Member of King Taurendur's Privy Council. Rhudaurian spymaster for the Witch-king. Highly educated, able to read and write in many languages, skilled in the military arts; slightly above average height, black hair, dark eyes. A cultured, personable man on the surface, Belzagar is totally unscrupulous and thoroughly devoted to achieving the goals of the King of Angmar. Though he is good with the sword, he prefers not to fight, suffering from cowardice.

Background: Belzagar, Lord of Dol Duniath, was born at the family's ancestral hall in northeastern Rhudaur. The eldest son of his parents, he inherited the title and a place on the king's privy council when his father died. An embittered man, his father was frustrated that his plans to expand his holdings never materialized during his lifetime. Belzagar's father had hoped for an advantageous marriage for his son with a daughter of the lord of a nearby estate, but no young ladies of marriageable age were available. Belzagar, far more interested in the old dark arts and devoting much of his time to that rather than estate management, remained unwed. Approached by agents from the Northern Kingdom of Angmar who promised that he could obtain great powers in the arcane arts, he accepted their offer. Later under the guise of wishing to see the land before he "settled down," he traveled to Carn Dum, staying there for two years and receiving instructions from masters in the arcane arts.

Royal Family of Arthedain

King Malvegil (b. 1144 - age 203 at start of game) - Sixth King of Arthedain, son of King Celebrindor who reigned until 1272. Clearly drawing near the end of his days. The heaviest fighting among the Three Kingdoms had come to its end in his father's reign. Malvegil's reign began peacefully, but in recent years, Orcs had become a menace in Eriador for the first time in many long years - and to the north, the mysterious kingdom of Angmar had arisen beyond the bounds of Arnor, though none yet knew what this portended.

Malvegil's queen (not yet named - b. 1172 - age 172 at start of game) is from the Princely house of Fornost, and her nephew is the current Prince.*


Celebrindol

(b. 1226 - age 121 at start of game) - Heir to the throne, later would be crowned as "Argeleb" - attempting to establish a cavalry for Arthedain.

Sulawen "wind maiden" / "weather maiden" (b. 1261 - age 86 at start of game) - wife of Celebrindol, daughter of Amon Sul's warden. Born at Amon Sul 13 years after King Celebrindor had established her grandfather as Arthedain's new Warden at Amon Sul. She was the first child born in the family line after this, so her name comemmorates the place. Now her father is warden, and one day her brother will be.


Beleg (b. 1309 - age 38 at start of game) - Eldest son of Celebrindol and Sulawen - later would be crowned as "Arveleg"

Ethuiliel "daughter of spring" (b. 1316 - age 31 at start of game) - sister of Beleg - newly married (summer of 1347) into the extended household of Fornost's Prince when first mentioned. She and Beleg were close friends as well as siblings.

Aramacil "sword of the King" (b. 1323 - age 24 at start of game) - brother of Beleg - able horseman, being trained to assume leadership of cavalry when their father becomes King. His name denotes the role that the younger brother of a future king should play - being ever supportive of his elder brother.

Estelien "maiden of hope" (b. 1330 - age 17 at start of game) - sister of Beleg. She actually adores her eldest brother, but her sharp wit and whimsical mind can put him off.


* The House of Fornost:
In this concept of the Northern Dunedain realms, the land of Arnor had three "Princely" houses - each descended from the captain of a ship that accompanied Elendil to the shores of Middle-Earth (four ships came to Lindon - Elendil presumably captained one). At Arnor's division, each son of King Earendur aligned himself with one of these princes. The closest alliance was between the eldest son, Amlaith, and the House of Fornost - for Amlaith had married a daughter of their house - and her father and brothers came to his aid when his brothers rebelled against him.

In Cardolan and Rhudaur, the relationship between Isildur's descendants and their Princely allies cooled somewhat over the years, but in Arthedain they remained closely linked as long as the Kingdom endured. Both houses shared the upper portion of the city (which was at first the grounds of the Princely House - and part of which they gave to Amlaith for building the Palace of Arthedain and the Great Hall of Fornost).

Calafornien "daughter of the northern lights" (about the same age as Estelien) is a grand-daughter of the current Prince, making her Beleg's second cousin, once-removed. Ethuiliel married a first cousin of hers, rather than her brother (a companion of Beleg), for Calafornien's brother will be Prince one day. This prevents creating a close family tie which would prohibit marriage between a future King and a daughter of a future Prince for the next few generations.

Orogost - Age 150. the elderly Steward of the Kingdom, he is acting as regent since the death of King Dirion. He was Dirion's closest advisor, and has been accustomed to more or less running the kingdom for many years now.


Amdír - Age 75. Orogost's son, essentially acting as a secretary and assistant to his father. Possibly ambitious and somewhat restive under his father's close watch.



Galphant - Age 100. the son and heir-apparent of the very old and ailing Prince Rammastir of Baranduin, Galphant hopes to claim the throne of Cardolan through his mother, King Dirion's only sister.

Herunarth - Age 30. only son of Galphant. A young man, eager to distinguish himself.

Hador - Age 160. another member of the Council of Cardolan. The closest ally of Rammastir and Galphant on the Council, he is crafty and devious.

Belecthor - Age 110. the Count of Tharbad, and, as Admiral of Cardolan, a member of the Council. Belecthor is a hail-fellow-well-met type - loves food, drink, and women, essentially good natured. Constantly in debt, he has essentially sold his services to the King of Arthedain in exchange for money, although he probably doesn't see it that way. Congenial to everyone, including his political opponents.

Adrahil - Age 80. another member of the Council, Adrahil has spent time as King Dirion's emissary in Fornost, and is, along with Belecthor, the other member of the pro-Arthedain faction on the Council. He is somewhat quiet and reserved. Little has really been said about him as yet.

Associates[/u]

Aegnor, age 45, Dúnadan. The Steward of the Prince of Baranduin, Aegnor is of the lower nobility. He is very loyal to the family of the Princes, which his ancestors have served for many generations. Young and somewhat inexperienced, he can get in over his head, but his calm demeanor and air of competence generally prevents anyone from noticing.

Duilin, age 32, Gwathuirim of Gondor. Duilin comes from the people of the vales of the White Mountains, but he grew up on the streets of Pelargir. He has spent much of his life in the army of Gondor, where he met Thurisind. Generally the more prone to worrying of the pair, but also (perhaps as a result) the more prone to rash action.

Thurisind, age 30, Northman. Thurisind is a prince of one of the less powerful tribes of Northmen, but he left his home to seek his fortune in the army of Gondor. Like Duilin, he has an eye for the ladies and the main chance. His barbaric appearance shouldn't deceive - he's no dumb barbarian. He's just as sharp as Duilin.
